Welcome to the Albert J. Solnit Integrated Training Program

The Yale Child Study Center and Yale Department of Psychiatry are delighted to present their joint venture in residency training. The Integrated Child, Adolescent, and Adult Residency Program began training residents in July, 2004 and continues to grow as it accepts two trainees a year who have a strong interest in developmentally-focused mental health and intend to follow an academic career trajectory.

Our trainees have a wide range of clinical and research interests, from animal models to clinical trials and from autism to addictions, and represent the future leaders of child and adolescent psychiatry.

This program is jointly funded by the Yale Medical School and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and incorporates six years of training that includes adult psychiatry residency training, specialty fellowship training in child and adolescent psychiatry, and more than 2 years of research training. Central to the Program’s mission is helping trainees consolidate their identities as both developmental experts and clinician-scholars dedicated to the advancement of the field. Our program is named after Al Solnit, M.D. the first Yale trainee in child psychiatry who also chaired the Child Study Center and, in retirement, was commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services for 8 years. Dr. Solnit is remembered as a superb clinician and educator who always emphasized the importance of a child-centered approach.

This joint venture at Yale is one of several programs nationally that are being implemented. The Overall Description provides a clear picture of this larger endeavor.

The Yale Curriculum meets all existing program requirements for residency education in both general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. As an alternative training route, it is meant to provide a national model that will increase the overall number and quality of child and adolescent psychiatrists. It is further designed to accelerate the development of outstanding candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in academic child and adolescent psychiatry, and who wish to be board certified in both general psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry.

The Child Study Center is internationally recognized for excellence in child and adolescent psychiatry training. The traditional child psychiatry fellowship program, which has been continuously accredited for over 40 years, graduates up to 7 child and adolescent psychiatrists annually. Trainees in this traditional track and in the new integrated program are a diverse group of talented physicians from all over the nation. Additionally, in recognition of the extent of need for child and adolescent psychiatrists worldwide, we have international trainees whose mission is to gain the expertise required to provide care and train physicians in their native countries to treat psychiatrically impaired children and adolescents. For physicians who have completed general psychiatry training, there is the 2-year clinical training program and a 4-year clinical and research academic training track. All training highlights the acquisition of superior clinical skills in working with children and families in the full arena of community and clinical care settings and multidisciplinary context. Additionally, opportunities for bench and clinical research, training in public policy and advocacy, and participation in international initiatives are unique aspects of the program. The Child Study Center seeks to train future leaders in the fields of clinical, research and public policy work to advance state of the art of prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders in children.
