ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders

Martin L. Kutscher, M.D. & Scott Bellini, Ph.D.

Crowne Plaza Chicago North Shore
510 E. Rt. 83
Mundelein, IL 60060
Thursday, November 12th and Friday, November 13th, 2009

Thursday, November 12th
ADHD: Living without Brakes
Martin L. Kutscher, M.D.

Current concepts of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) extend much further than the traditional triad of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. The course will cover the full range of symptoms experienced by people with ADHD and their families— including over-reactions, brakeless behaviors, easy frustration, disorganization, and “future blindness.” Special emphasis will be given to the concepts of executive function; and to co-morbidities such as autistic spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, anxieties, OCD, tics, depression, bipolar depression, sensory integration disorder, and central auditory processing. Dr. Kutscher empathically summarizes how to identify and differentiate these co-occurring issues. Behavioral therapy at home, organizational support at home and school, and medication treatments will be discussed.

Learning Objectives for Participants:

  • Understand the role of executive function problems in ADHD (such as organization and inhibition difficulties).
  • Recognize other co-occurring conditions of the syndrome mix of autistic spectrum disorders, anxiety/OCD spectrum disorders, tics, depression, bipolar depression, sensory integration disorder, and central auditory processing disorders.
  • Understand the role of behavioral interventions, including: keeping it positive and keeping it calm.
  • Understand educational interventions for ADHD, including organizational and study skills.
  • Understand the need for continued intervention to provide an ongoing “safety net.”
  • Understand the role of medications in ADHD and co-morbid conditions.

Friday, November 13th
No More Meltdowns: Handling Challenging Behaviors & Teaching Social Skills
Jed Baker, Ph.D.

Students on the autism spectrum often present with difficulty regulating their feelings and interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills, how to generalize skills into the natural setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from peers. Information will be imparted though lecture, interactive exercises, and video clips.

Clinical Issues in Autism Spectrum Disorders:
From Assessment to Treatment

Celine Saulnier, Ph.D.

Keller Auditorium
University of Connecticut Health Center
Farmington, Connnecticut
Friday, Novemeber 13, 2009
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Currently affect 1 out of 150 individuals with striking variability in their level of functioning and developmental trajectories throughout life. Currently, the causes for autism remain unclear; thus treatment requires intensive and comprehensive therapeutic and educational services, possibly throughout the lifespan. This workshop will define the clinical features assocated with ASD and how to differentiate among the different subtypes (e.g., autism, Asperger Syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified).

A multidisciplinary approach to assessing and diagnosing the disorder, incorporating the disciplines of psychology, speech pathology, psychiatry, occupational and physical therapy, and genetics will be presented. Specific topics that will be covered include early detection and diagnosis of infants and toddlers at risk for ASD and how diagnostic profiles can change over time, particularly in very young children; evaluation of school-aged children - when paradigm shifts occur in conceptualizing an individual's hierarchy of needs; and diagnostic differentials and comorbidities that arise across the age range (e.g., anxiety and depression in higher functioning individuals).

This workshop will also cover evidence-based practices in treating ASD. These include behavioral interventions, such as Applied Behavior Analysis, social and communication skills programs, and occupational therapy. In addition, effective strateiges for enhancing social-emotional and psychological functiong, vocational, adaptive, and motor skills willl be discussed, particularly in relation to school-age individuals as they prepare for independent living outside of the educational system. Finally, psychopharmacological therapies and alternative interventions that are commonly use in treating ASD will be addressed.

Celine Saulnier, Ph.D. is the Training Director for the Autism Program at the Yale Child Study Center. She obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Connecticut. She then completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship awarded by the National Alliance for Autism Research, training with Drs. Fred Volkmar and Ami Klin before joing the Yale faculty. Dr. Saulnier supervises and conducts diagnostic evaluations on infants, toddlers, and school-aged children, ranging from 6 months to 21 years of age. Her current research focuses on adaptive behavior deficits in comparison to cognitive ability, particularly in higher functioning individuals.

At the conclusion of this confeerence, participants will be able to:

  • Define the clinical features associated with ASD and how to differentiate among them (e.g., autism, Asperger Syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified)
  • Recite the evidence associated with early detection and intensive intervention in infants and toddlers with ASDs
  • Recite the evidence associated with best practices in treating ASDs throughout the lifespan
  • Identify barriers in treating ASDs, both in lower functioning and higher functioning individuals

The Inclusive Classroom
Paula Kluth, Ph.D.

This interactive day features group activities, real-world stories, and tools you can bring back to the classroom immediately. Participants will learn practical ways of supporting students with autism spectrum labels & other disabilities within a general education classroom. The centerpiece of the presentation is Paula's "Top Ten Strategies List for Inclusive Classrooms" in which she addresses the need for sensory supports, visuals, active learning, "safe space", and materials that capitalize on student strengths. Other topics addressed include defining (and redefining) autism, listening to the voices of those with autism, creating more responsive lessons, making the classroom comfortable, and providing opportunities for communication skill development. The presentation provides teachers with the necessary knowledge and strategies to understand every student as complex, as capable, and as a learner.
